Traceroute, by some name, is available on almost every network-connected platform for doing network diagnosis. Like many tools, it's conceptually simple to use, but it's operation and interaction with the behavior of router implementations often produces misleading results for an unwary user. In this post, I explain how traceroute works, how routers participate in the process, and how to avoid a couple of common pitfalls.
